Every year, taxpayers receive a tax notice at an old address, sometimes months after their move. Changing your address with the tax administration is a free process that can be done online, but its actual effects depend on when it is done and how the various tax services handle the information.
Tax Attachment and January 1st Date: The Rule That Conditions Everything
The address that counts for income tax and local taxes is the one occupied on January 1st of the tax year. A move in March has no impact on property tax or residence tax (for second homes) for the current year: these notices are calculated based on the situation as of January 1st.
This rule has a direct consequence. If the address change is reported after the income declaration deadline, the taxpayer risks receiving their notices at the wrong public finance center. The competent center remains that of the old address until the report is effectively processed.
To inform the tax authorities of a change of address, two windows should be prioritized: as soon as the move is completed, or at the latest during the annual income declaration, which includes a field dedicated to the new address.

Personal Space on impots.gouv.fr: Two Paths, Two Levels of Traceability
The site impots.gouv.fr offers two distinct methods for reporting a move from the personal space. The choice between the two is not trivial.
Direct Modification via “My Profile”
After logging in, the “My Profile” button gives access to the “My Personal Information” section. Clicking “edit” under the displayed address initiates the process. Once validated, the message “Your change of address is being processed” appears.
This method is quick but does not generate a downloadable acknowledgment of receipt. No confirmation document is retained in the personal space after validation.
Secure Messaging: A Channel with History
The second option goes through the secure messaging of the personal space: “Write”, then “Change of Situation”, then “Change of Postal Address”. According to feedback published on Services Publics+ in September 2026, the tax service in Chambéry confirms that this messaging allows for reporting a change of situation and keeping a history of exchanges.
The secure messaging serves as proof in case of error or follow-up. For taxpayers who want to demonstrate that they have indeed completed the process on a specific date, this is the most reliable channel.
When the Online Process Doesn’t Work: Concrete Alternatives
Testimonials collected on the Services Publics+ platform between September and October 2026 show that the online process may be technically accessible for some users and unavailable for others. Connection issues, interface problems, or account updates sometimes block the procedure.
Three alternatives exist in this case:
- Postal mail addressed to the public finance center corresponding to the address on January 1st of the tax year, specifying both the old and new addresses as well as the tax number
- Telephone assistance via the general tax number, which can record the request but without guarantee of written traceability
- Support in a France Services space, useful for people who are far from digital services or facing persistent technical blocks
Mail remains the only alternative that produces a dated trace if sent by registered mail. However, the processing time is longer than the digital route.
Change of Tax Address and Other Organizations: A Synchronization That Doesn’t Exist
One point that official guides rarely mention clearly enough: the change of tax address does not trigger any automatic updates with other administrations. The CAF, health insurance, energy suppliers, banks, or vehicle registration organizations must be notified separately.
The online service “I change my contact details” on service-public.fr allows for notifying several organizations simultaneously. Field feedback varies on this point: some users report that the centralized process worked well, while others find that some organizations did not receive or process the notification.
Manual verification remains necessary. It is advisable to check, a few weeks after reporting, that each organization has properly recorded the new address.
- CAF and health insurance: check via the online personal space of each organization
- Vehicle registration: the update is mandatory within one month after the move, via the France Titres site (formerly ANTS), free of charge
- Energy suppliers and operators: contact each provider directly

Paid Intermediaries: An Unnecessary Expense for a Free Process
Feedback published on Services Publics+ indicates that some users have paid a provider to change their address, particularly for vehicle registration. All address change procedures with the tax administration and France Titres are free.
Websites that charge for this type of service are not official sites. The administration recommends using only impots.gouv.fr for tax matters and France Titres for vehicle registration certificates. No intermediary is necessary or authorized to access a taxpayer’s tax space.
The safest reflex remains to check that the URL of the site used ends with “.gouv.fr” before entering personal information or a tax number. A move generates enough expenses without adding unjustified billing.
